The world of literature is wide and diverse. A broad spectrum of love and hate, romance and lust, anger and revenge. Happiness, greed, plots and schemes. It ranges time and space with the greatest minds of all times, or not so great minds that were favored for their artful words or and ability to weave together a picture in your mind’s eye. Romeo and Juliet, Pride and Prejudice, complete works of poetry and Edgar Allen Poe’s tales. In the literature classes, you will receive a bit of everything, from dark and horrific to happy and in love.
While I realize that these great works aren’t any too likely to carry any weight in your future professions, I hope that you find something in each great work that touches your mind, your heart or your spirit. A saying to take with you through life, a guiding word that makes even the worst of situations seem not so bad, a smile when something gives you a sense of déjà vu. This is a class I want you to enjoy, so assignments maybe not be typical to what you might expect. I hope to make the courses fun and something that draws in your interest.
What I expect from my students is attention. It doesn’t have to be rapt, but it does need to be focused.
I expect you to participate in group discussions, to make your theories known, to share your thoughts and feelings no matter how silly or ridiculous they might seem.
I expect work to be turned in on time, or a meeting to explain why that won’t be possible in advance.
I expect you to make suggestions. If there’s a great literary work you’ve read that you’d like to share, then please let me know and I will truly try to work it in.
Most of all, I expect you to explore the words you read with an open mind, and an open heart.
