Less than a week until orientation and classes were to begin, and Anouk already felt like a fish out of water. The friends she'd made the year before had yet to arrive from their grandiose vacations around Europe, with the exception of Yvonne. But that girl had her own group of friends and was ever the socialite - Anna couldn't quite keep up. At least during the day, she could busy herself with suggested reading lists for the classes she'd be taken. Yesterday, she'd spent the day in the gardens with her camera. Today, she was in the school library.
In the past, Anouk had combed through the books looking for anything that so much as mentioned the fusion of Necromancy and Invocation. In the past, she had come up with almost nothing to explain her...predicament. Explain or disprove. However, with the return of Professor Hallan teaching Necromancy once more, several new texts had been received by the school. Sitting at a table in the otherwise empty room with one such book in front of her, she rested her chin in her palm and read, murmuring to herself as she did so.
"...believed to be a synthesis of Arabic astral magic and exorcism of the Christian and Jewish teaching..."
"...sacrifice was the payment for summoning - in form of flesh or spirit of humans or animals..."
"...those under the will of a spirit may find themselves waking at the witching hour in places they have no memory of..."
As she read, the small hairs on the back of her neck and along her arms raised, small chills running down her spine. Her heart beat felt like a leaf twisting violently in the wind. Looking up from the words, she glanced around, imagining some sound echoing behind a shelf. With a deep breath, she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and took a tip of the (now cold) tea she'd brought with her. It was an easy enough spell to heat it up again, but she didn't bother. Suddenly the idea of expelling the energy to do so worried her, as though it might attract something she couldn't see.
Silly girl with her ghost stories.
